Summer Weekend Ideas for Food, Fun and Activities with Adult Children

lifestyle Jun 22, 2020

Hey there! Summer is in full swing and you, like us, may feel like your creative juices are running low. Here’s where we step in to help put a little pep in your step and provide some inspiration for injecting fun into your July Fourth weekend - or any summer weekend for that matter!

This is a little different type of blog post from us but let’s be real, it’s a different kind of summer and we are all about making the most of these fleeting, warm, weekends that we dream about all year long!

This post is inspired by Mary’s family’s Memorial Day weekend when her adult children, and son-in-law were in town for the weekend. After being a little cooped up from shelter-in-place, Mary really wanted to make the weekend memorable and special.

Keep reading for Mary’s weekend agenda, which includes menus and recipes, game and craft ideas (and links to buy them.)

To begin, they made a list of all the things they wanted to do which included:

Frisbee game

Catch (baseball)

Spike ball

tequila taste test * remember we said “adult children” ;)

crafting / tie-dye

corn hole

flip cup

old videos

dinners included:

Friday night fish fry

Spiedini's , mac ‘n cheese , arugula salad

brats/burgers bar

Make it easy on everyone and order carry out for your first night together. Fish fries are the popular choice when you’re in Wisconsin! Enjoy catching up and relaxing together on your patio, gather around a bonfire and share good ol s’ mores!

Let Saturday fun begin with deciding what everyone really wants to do. For Mary’s family, that included spikeball, catch, the frisbee game, tie-dye, tequila taste testing followed by margaritas and a group effort assembling dinner. They packed a lot into the day, but found it was fun to have a plan and something to look forward to since time together always seems to fly by.

In case tie-dying seems a little advanced for your crafting skill set, we have an Instagram video about the tie-dying here

And for ease of planning, here are the recipes Mary used:

mac ‘n cheese

After so much fun and an action-packed day on Saturday, a more laid back day might be a good plan for Sunday.

Mary’s family watched church online while sipping coffee on the patio.

The afternoon got them geared up for a hike along a lake and back in time to fire up the grill for a build-your-own-burger-brat-bar!

There’s no perfect plan and typically the best thing is to just enjoy time together, but we hope you will find some inspiration here and we would LOVE to hear about it afterwards!
